How long is a background check valid?

The background check is valid for seven years if the contractor stays with the same company.

Do I need a Great Lakes Safety Training Center training badge?

Yes, all contractors must have the GLSTC training badge indicating they have completed the applicable training along with the background check verification.

Can I use a background check from another Dow site?

If a contractor comes from another Dow site that has a background check process and declares he/she has gone through and passed it, then Midland ES&S will honor their background check but confirm with that Dow site that search criteria is sufficient.

What if I change employers, is my background still valid?

The contractor must retain a background check for the company that he/she is working for. Every time a contractor changes companies, a new background check must be submitted to GLSTC for a new check.

What happens if a person is convicted of a crime after the background check has been conducted?

Companies should frequently review the performance of their employees and investigate any reports of possible activity that could jeopardize his or her ability to work on a Dow site. Any confirmed felony conviction should be reported and discussed with Dow’s site ES&S leader for appropriate action.

What if a person is convicted and currently on parole for that conviction?

Convictions related to theft, violence or drugs could jeopardize a person’s ability to work on the Dow site. Any confirmed criminal conviction should be reported and discussed with Dow’s site ES&S for appropriate action.

How often do I have to enter a Dow site to keep my badge current?

When a person doesn’t enter a Dow site for three months (for whatever reason) his or her electronic entry badge will be deactivated.

What do I need to do if my badge is deactivated?

First, you will need to validate your training and background check are still valid by contacting GLSTC. Second, you will need to visit a Dow Security Gate to have your badge reactivated.

What is the difference between a member and a non-member company?

Non-Member companies are required to submit payment with the background paperwork in order for GLSTC to proceed with the background screening process. Member companies will be invoiced.

How much does a background check cost?

For member companies, the cost of a background check is $69. For non-member companies, the cost of a background check is $83.

How will I know when my background check is complete?

You will be notified by e-mail if an e-mail is provided on page 4. If an e-mail has not been provided, the primary contact for your company will be notified instead. You will then need to come into our office to receive a new Great Lake Safety Training Center ID card that reflects your current background information on it.

How far in advance should I submit my background paperwork?

Please submit background paperwork 14 days prior to the date in which you will need MIOPS I-Park access.
